Day 103: Have You Asked Someone How You Are Doing?

Day 103:  Have you asked someone how you are doing?  Very few economic development organizations and some chamber of commerce review the staff every year.  Most people are uncomfortable doing reviews and being reviewed.  Even when we are doing an awesome job, it’s not something we seek out.  We recommend to our clients that they complete an annual review of their staff.  Not really to critique them, but to make sure everyone understands what the expectations are.  I have seen several folks fired over the years because the board didn’t think someone was doing their job.  The board had a different expectation than the exec.  A great organization goes through a planning exercise every year.  When the plan is completed the staff’s plan of work should integrate into the plan.  That way at the end of the year, it was pretty clear what was expected by the goals and measurements that were put in the place at the beginning of the year.  As the exec, you really should want to have these reviews.  If you do these every year and take heart what was said and you make the proper adjustments, you can probably have a job for life, if one exists.  Next:  If I were to do one thing today, what would it be?
