Day 135: What Are the Keys to a Good Marketing Plan?

Day 135:  What are the keys to a good marketing plan?  I am not trying to be cute, but the answer may not be what you expect….  Execution is the key to a good marketing plan.  Most of our clients are in Greater America (rural) so they are many times a one or two person shop.  Most of our clients execute our marketing plans.  Several don’t.  So, to some readers this is probably a foreign concept.  But if you are a seasoned economic development professional, you most likely started in a small community, so try to think back to those times.  But, I know of some larger organizations that get can get distracted from their plan too.  I am biased, but the best marketing plans should be developed by a third party.  It is best to have fresh eyes for many reasons.  There are several good firms that can write good marketing plans.  But we can’t implement.  Well, actually, I guess we do end up helping some of our clients implement.  But in essence by hiring us they are still making sure the plan gets executed.  If you are a one person shop or twenty, the key to being successful is action.  Take the marketing plan and work it until you have gone through all the items.  The marketing plan and strategic plan should be your guide for what you do every day in the office.  I know that is easier said than done when you are in a one person shop, but it should help you to say “no” to things that don’t fit in your plan.  Next:  Should our community have an app?
